What the Virgin Mary Knew

I'm currently reading through the Gospel of Luke in preparation for Sunday morning and I was reminded of the song Mary Did You Know as I read through Luke 1:26-56. I thought that I’d look at what exactly did Mary know as far as Luke 1 is concerned. While I would love to do a survey of all four Gospels and study Mary’s knowledge and view of Jesus such a task is laborious and time at the moment does not permit.

Here’s what Mary knew as far as Luke 1 is concerned.
  • Mary knew she had “found favor with God” (Lk. 1:30).
  • Mary knew that her child was “the Son of the Most High” (Lk. 1:32) “the Son of God” (Lk. 1:35).
  • Mary knew that her “baby boy” would restore the Davidic throne and “reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end" (Lk. 1:33).
  • Mary knew that a miraculous birth would not be “impossible with God" (Lk. 1:37).
  • Mary knew that all generations would call her blessed (Lk. 1:48).
  • Mary knew how to praise God (Lk. 1:46-47).
  • Mary knew that God looks on the humble and opposes the proud (Lk. 148, 51-53).
  • Mary knew that God is Mighty and Holy (Lk. 1:49)
  • Mary knew that God is faithful to His promises (Lk. 1:54-55).
By the way...I highly recommend the movie The Nativity Story. I love the portrayal of Joseph. Joseph's character is reflective of Matthew 1:19. It says Joseph was "a just man." He's honorable and the love and care he shows for Mary is impressive and worthy of emulation. Mary too is a great example of faith. We do well to emulate it.
