Astonished at Jesus' Preaching

28And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes. Matthew 7:28-29

I am, for the first time, attending the annual Shepherd’s Conference. Al Mohler was this evening’s speaker and he spoke from Matthew 7:28-29. He established very early on in his message that the first mark of the church is that the word of God is preached. Our warrant to do so is that God has spoken. He is not silent. Therefore we too must speak. The pattern of preaching is that the word is read and the word is explained. The preacher must always be mindful that his is a stewardship given solely by grace because no one is qualified for the office of preacher. No one deserves it.
No doubt our authority is different than Jesus’, but our proclamation must carry with it the weight of the word. The congregations must know and be assured that the preacher knows what he is talking about and that in his task of preaching he must show that what text says it means. Certainly our preaching must be marked by confidence and certainty.
